BAILEYS OF GLENROWAN

Paul Dahlenburg - Winemaker

Not many Australian winemakers are granted the opportunity to work with vines established over 100 years ago but, for Paul Dahlenburg, his position over the last decade at Baileys of Glenrowan is a privileged one.

'I just love the place,' he says without a moment's hesitation. 'The grounds are surrounded by historic buildings and I get to work with wines like no other - from fortifieds crafted over several generations through to the excitement of creating vintage table wines.'

Paul's road to Baileys started with a childhood on a farm in Yackandandah, where he recalls spending endless hours swimming, fishing and exploring the waters of the Yackandandah creek with his mates. He believes it was destiny he would return to the region that had captured him at such a young age, and where his children now enjoy the same healthy and carefree lifestyle.

'During study for my degree, I worked every semester break at Morris Wines at Rutherglen and, I have to say, Mick Morris made an impression on me with his gentle and humble nature,' reveals Paul. 'I thought this culture combined with the ability to craft and create something for others is the one for me.'

Paul's skills were well directed towards Baileys where he produces Tokay and Muscat of world renown. Before settling back in the Glenrowan area, though, he worked in many wine regions throughout Australia, which convinced him of the unrivalled diversity of Victoria's North East.

'Where else can you taste sparkling wines produced at above 800 metre elevation to arguably one of Australia's finest Chardonnays?' he challenges. 'Then there's Shiraz that is mighty powerful and has the ability to cellar, and you can't forget the real jewel in the crown - the Tokays and Muscats of the North East.'

OK, Paul, not many people are going to argue against that.
